Arts Access
Giving Back to the Community
DRAA's Arts Access outreach program has received incredible financial support from community business partners and individual donors, allowing DRAA to provide school children with limited financial resources the opportunity to experience high-quality professional performances and exhibits at the Lesher Center for the Arts. These children will be introduced to new and creative ways of viewing the world through live performances and artistic exhibits, using their natural inclination for curiosity and creativity.
Questions about Arts Access should be directed to Laura Hunter at lhunter@draa.org

Untold Stories: Early American Quilts from the Collection of Susan Brooks
October 8 & October 22, 2008
This exhibition presents 30 quilts from the 19th and 20th centuries, that were created during some of the most momentous and significant eras of U.S. history. Stitched by resilient and courageous women, the quilts chronicle the slave era and Underground Railroad, the Civil War, the Mormon and Oregon Trails, and the temperance movement. Infused with meaning, the quilts in Untold Stories are like community-made catchment basins where life experiences have been captured on a stitched surface.
Theme of School Tour: Learn how quilt patterns throughout American history have told the stories of settlers, soldiers, slaves, and pioneers.
School Tour Art Project: Tell your own story by designing a unique quilt pattern with geometric shapes.
Illuminated Sculpture
January 14 & January 28, 2009
Lighting up the short, dark days of winter, is an innovative exhibition of luminous work guest curated by The Crucible’s Christian Schiess. Schiess is an award winning artist, author of “The Light Artist Anthology,” and Chair of the Light Art Department at the Bay Area’s only nonprofit sculpture studio and educational foundry. The artists in the exhibition use more standard materials such as neon, argon and electric light discharge as well as some of the emerging mediums such as LED’s, electroluminescent wire, and photovoltaics.
Theme of School Tour: Experience a wide range of three-dimensional art that you can see in the dark!
School Tour Art Project: Create a mobile using materials that explore the properties of light, movement, and space.
Encaustic: Working in Wax
May 20 & May 27, 2009
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. This technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100-300 CE, in the Blachernitissa and other early icons, as well as in many works of 20th-century American artists, including Jasper Johns. This national juried exhibition will feature some of the most renowned artists working in this medium today and will provide an arena for educating other artists and students about the past and possibilities of working in wax.
Theme of Tour: Discover the far-reaching use of beeswax in artworks that are two and three-dimensional.
Tour Art Project: Create your own encaustic artwork using wax, images, and found objects.
